December 1st immediately brings thoughts of Christmas to most kiddos, and our PDS students are no exception! Therefore, I always try to plan some of my lessons to capitalize on their excitement. Today our kindergartners had such fun "coloring" these Christmas trees! Little did they know they were also getting lots of practice manipulating the mouse and utilizing drop down menus!
A couple of weeks ago our fifth and sixth graders started some pretty sweet projects.....LITERALLY! Candy corn is in abundance this time of year, so it provided the perfect inspiration for the fifth graders.....
What kid doesn't love candy, right? So this project has built in motivation. Students in several grades are working on projects based on some kind of candy, and once the projects are completed ...well....of course, the kids will just HAVE to eat the candy they drew, painted, etc.
I can hardly wait to share photos of their artwork!
Thanks to www.carlisleartclass.blogspot.com and emilyjanevalenza.com for sharing their super ideas with the rest of us art teachers!
The first srtist we are studying about this year is Pablo Picasso. We've viewed and discussed examples of his work, and read a few books about him, too. What an inspiration this great artist has been for our class projects! Here's a look at a few from some of our second graders.
One of the experiences offered at Eagles' Flight auction earlier this year was a pottery workshop with yours truly. Hudson and I had SO much fun making these beautiful keepsakes! He learned many new techniques, and now has lots of treasures to share. Thanks to Hudson's family for supporting PDS and letting me be a part of the fun!
OK, I admit it! Today I'm being a shameless show-off! Now that the kiddos have had the first look, I absolutely can't wait any longer to unveil the beautiful new building at PDS to the rest of the world. I still can't believe I GET to work here! What a blessing!!!!!
First, here's a glimpse of our spacious new (and updated) Computer Lab....
Just down the hall....this art teacher's dream room...
Needless to say my students and I are BEYOND excited!
What a joy it was to finally share the new building with some of our students today! Their beautiful smiles and the sweet sounds of their excited voices made my day, for sure! I'll bet it will yours, too.
Tomorrow marks the first day of a brand new school year! Yay! AND the first in our new building! I can hardly wait for special classes to begin and to unveil our awesome new Computer Lab and fantastic new Art room! Until then, I'll be busy unpacking....
Shortly before school dismissed for the summer, construction began on our new addition...And future home to our Art and Computer classes! Boys and girls, you are in for a real treat! I can hardly wait for you to see (and use) our awesome new rooms! More pictures to come soon....
Thank you, Crosstie Arts Council, for awarding our school a mini-grant. Your generosity not only provided our Sixth grade with a fun and rewarding art experience, but also with special mementos of their years at PDS. THANKS SO MUCH!
Sooo, sometimes even with the best plans ....things happen....like the control unit on our kiln going out! In steps the DSU Art Dept. to the rescue! MANY THANKS to Ky Johnston for his advice and assistance in getting the offending part shipped off for repair and to Ron Koehler for firing our 6th graders' last pottery projects for us!!!!!!! PDS (and Cleveland, for that matter!) is so blessed to have this wonderful university in our own backyard!
Today was an especially exciting day in the PDS Computer Lab! The children were all smiles as they discovered the lab had been updated with new flat screen monitors!!!!! Yay! We owe a HUGE THANK YOU to EVERYONE involved in the Eagle's Flight Auction for making these wonderful improvements possible!
Our Grandparents' Day/Spring Art Show was a huge success! The judges were very impressed with all of the children's work and had a daunting task, but at the end of the day they awarded 36 students ribbons. Today we honored these boys and girls in Chapel! Congratulation!
Here are a few pictures of some of our kids enjoying the Spring Exhibit! Not only did they love seeing their own artwork displayed, but they really liked seeing the kinds of projects the other classes did this year. I'm very proud of our students and how hard they have worked for me, but I was even more proud today when I heard them complimenting others on a job well done!
Our 4K classes have been learning that making art is more than just painting and drawing. We talked about the beautiful Sculpture Garden at DSU's BPAC across the street. (For a virtual tour go to http://thesculpturegardenms.com/) Then, we had lots of fun making sculptures of our own!
March is right around the corner.....and so is our PDS Grandparents and Grandfriends Day! Part of the Celebration will be our annual Art Exhibit. Thanks to parents Candice F., Ann N., Amy M. Leigh Ann F., Lacy C. and Tracy D. for helping me get the children's artwork ready for the show. Check out a few of their masterpieces! Dates and times for the Exhibit will be posted soon.
